About Gir National Park

Gir National Park, located in Gujarat, India, is the only home to the majestic Asiatic lions. Spanning over 1,400 square kilometers, it is a thriving wildlife sanctuary known for its unique dry deciduous forest ecosystem, interspersed with grasslands and perennial rivers. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1965, Gir plays a pivotal role in preserving the Asiatic lion population, which was once on the brink of extinction.

Apart from lions, the park is home to diverse wildlife, including leopards, hyenas, jackals, sambar deer, and chinkaras. It also boasts a rich birdlife, with over 300 recorded species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The Kamleshwar Dam within the park is a haven for marsh crocodiles and serves as a vital water source.

The best way to explore Gir is through guided jeep safaris, which provide an opportunity to witness wildlife in its natural habitat. The park remains open from mid-October to mid-June, with the cooler months being ideal for visits. Gir also offers cultural experiences, as it is surrounded by villages of the Maldhari and Siddhi communities, known for their harmonious coexistence with wildlife.

Gir National Park is a testament to successful conservation efforts and a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.
